Homeopathic medicine is founded on the principle that the most effective way to achieve lasting health is by stimulating the body’s inherent ability to heal itself. It is a unique form of natural medicine that is both safe and highly effective for the treatment of acute and chronic disease.
The principles of homeopathy were developed into a system of medicine by the German physician, Samuel Hahnemann, in the late 1700’s. Hahnemann rejected the harsh medical practices of his time and searched for an alternative method that was free from side-effects yet capable of affecting profound cures. Hahnemann explored the tendency in nature for “like to cure like,” recognizing that if a substance can cause symptoms of disease in a healthy person, then it can cure a sick person suffering from similar symptoms. An example that helps to illustrate this concept comes directly from Hahnemann’s own experience. He noticed that the natural substance quinine caused him to suffer from symptoms that were characteristic of malaria. He then went on to prescribe quinine to a patient who had malaria and found that it produced a rapid cure.
Homeopathic medicines or “remedies” are made from minute doses of plant, mineral, or animal substances. They are prepared by homeopathic pharmacies in accordance with FDA-approved guidelines. There are currently over 5,000 different homeopathic remedies. Effective treatment relies on matching the one appropriate remedy to the individual. To do this, a homeopath must take an in-depth history and learn the unique ways in which the individual experiences his or her symptoms and then carefully interpret that information to be able to choose the remedy that most closely corresponds to the case.
Homeopathy recognizes that all symptoms that a person experiences are inter-related. Rather than treating each ailment as a separate, distinct entity, the goal is to address the totality of the individual by choosing a homeopathic remedy that will be able to address the root cause of disease.
The frequency that one has to take their homeopathic remedy varies by the individual. Some people may have to take their remedy daily, while others will only need to take a single dose of their remedy with many months in between doses.
The goal of homeopathic treatment is to produce a deep, lasting, and curative effect on the patient. The healing that unfolds from a properly prescribed remedy is profound. By stimulating the body’s inherent healing capability, homeopathy has the ability to change people’s tendency for disease and to allow them to return to a place of greater health and resilience.
